The Fork Farm and Stables

Rural Conservation at its Finest

Situated at the confluence of two rivers in southern North Carolina, The Fork is an 1,100 acre working farm with a wide variety of topographic features, fields, woods and flood plain.  Field Sport Concepts was retained to assist in the re-imagining of its potential value for outdoor recreation.

A feasibility study was performed in order to ascertain the property’s suitability for a combination of uses including equestrian sports and breeding programs, wildlife habitat and management, and sustainable, environmentally friendly farming.  What we discovered was a rural landscape steeped in Native  American and colonial history, enriched by a local agricultural  tradition and ready to be molded by the creative eye of an outdoor enthusiast and committed conservationist.

A Plantation Feasibility Study, Field Sport Concepts’ final product, is a comprehensive  report that addresses the owner’s vision for the property and how the landforms, natural resources and wildlife can be enhanced to achieve that vision.  Analysis of the site includes not only topography, soils, vegetation, water and existing agricultural and recreational  uses but also, the history of the property and its relationship to the surrounding region.  The report makes specific recommendations for the location of the various field sport programs, farming, stables and residential buildings based on the suitability of the soils, wooded areas, wildlife habitat, and views.

As the realization of the owner’s vision, The Fork Farm and Stables, as it is called today, demonstrates the success of combining recreational and educational programs, such as the sporting clays course designed by FSC affiliate John Higgins of the British American Sporting Club, with a working farm and a world class equestrian facility.  By preserving the historical and ecological aspects of the property while keeping it alive with activity and adding outstanding architectural elements, the owner has enhanced the value of the farm and ensured the future sustainability of the land and its wildlife.

The Fork as it exists today is a true model of Field Sport Concepts’ belief in the thoughtful combination of a diversity of rural recreational pursuits with the conservation of irreplaceable farmland and wildlife.
